What is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical technique that removes excess skin and tightens the abdominal muscles to help you achieve what diet and exercise cannot. A tummy tuck can help you achieve a flatter, more defined figure by enhancing the contours of the abdominal region. As someone who specializes in tummy tucks, Dr. Layton is unique in this area in many ways, including the use of the Drain-Free Tummy Tuck TissuGlu®. Dr. Layton is one of a select few plastic surgeons that is extensively experienced and certified in this technique, which eliminates the needs for drains as well as the pain and scarring that are often associated with them. TissuGlu® is an FDA-approved synthetic surgical adhesive that bonds tissue layers together following surgery.
“When considering an abdomen procedure, you want to not only know your surgeon but trust that they understand how you want to look and feel, and that they can help you achieve the look you desire. A consultation gives you the opportunity to get to know me and for us to discuss your goals, desires and expectations. As many are self-conscious or embarrassed by their current appearance, I make every effort to make this a comfortable experience.” -Dr. Layton
There are three types of tummy tucks: full tummy tuck, mini tummy tuck, and an extended tummy tuck. When determining which procedure is best for a patient, Dr. Layton examines the following three layers of the abdomen:
- Fascia or muscle layer, which is the deep layer that separates the abdominal contents from the external skin and fat.
- Fatty layer between the muscle and overlying skin.
- External skin and the amount of excess skin on the patient.
How Much Does a Tummy Tuck Cost?
The cost of a tummy tuck can vary. A full tummy tuck ranges from $9,100 to $9,500, while a mini tummy tuck ranges from $6,300 to $6,600. During your consultation, Dr. Layton will be able to provide you with a treatment plan that matches your specific needs. At this point, we will be able to provide you with the exact cost of your treatment. We also offer financing services to help make this and other treatments more affordable.
What is the Tummy Tuck Procedure Like?
A full tummy tuck, which is the traditional tummy tuck procedure, addresses the full abdominal region. This treatment involves removing excess skin and fat from the stomach, then tightening the abdominal muscles for a firmer and more defined appearance. During a tummy tuck, a horizontal incision is made just below the top of the pubic hairline or below a cesarean section incision. The incision length is determined by the amount and location of excess skin. Through this incision, the skin and fat are elevated and separated from the underlying muscle/fascia layer.
What is a Mini Tummy Tuck?
Less invasive than a full tummy tuck and usually with a shorter incision, a mini tummy tuck is recommended for patients whose problem is limited to the area below the navel, with no problem in the upper abdomen. The typical patient for a mini tummy tuck is the well-fit mom that, after children, has a small pouch in the lower abdomen with excess skin. The procedure for a mini tummy tuck is similar to that of a full tummy tuck except that no incision is made around the navel. This is because a mini tummy tuck only addresses the muscle, fat, and skin below the navel.
What is an Extended Tummy Tuck?
An extended tummy tuck is mostly for patients with a large amount of excess skin, usually due to significant weight loss. The primary difference with an extended tummy tuck is the length of the incision, which may extend to the lateral sides of the abdomen to address a larger area.
How is Recovery Following a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck is an extensive surgery that requires about two weeks of initial downtime. During this time, patients will have to take time off of work and other activities in order to rest and heal adequately. We will provide you with a compression garment that will be worn for up to eight weeks, depending on the extent of your surgery. You will also have to avoid exercising for two to three months following your treatment. Any scars will fade over time, but we recommend using a silicone scar gel, such as Siligen, for several months to assist in the healing process.
