What is Hormone Replacement Therapy?

As we age, men and women both begin to experience a decrease in their hormone levels. For women, this typically happens immediately preceding and during menopause. For men, it tends to be a more gradual process. A hormonal imbalance can affect a vast number of bodily functions, creating many symptoms that you may not know are caused by changes in hormones. You may want to consider hormone replacement therapy if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

Women Men
  • Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
  • Poor concentration/memory lapses
  • Weight gain
  • Mood swings
  • Reduced libido
  • Osteoporosis
  • Vaginal thinning/dryness
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Insomnia/disturbed sleep
  • Decrease in libido (sex drive)
  • Lack of energy
  • Decrease in strength or endurance
  • Lost height
  • Decreased “enjoyment of life”
  • Sad and/or grumpy
  • Erections less strong
  • Deterioration in ability to play sports
  • Falling asleep often
  • Deterioration in work performance

How Much Does Hormone Replacement Therapy Cost?

The cost of hormone replacement therapy can vary depending on the gender of the patient. For females, a single hormone pellet treatment costs $300. For males, the treatment costs $600. We also offer a male hormone pellet with higher levels of testosterone, which costs $700. During your consultation, we will perform a few tests to determine the severity of your hormonal imbalance. Then, Dr. Layton will be able to provide you with a treatment plan that matches your specific needs. At this point, we will be able to provide you with the exact cost of your treatment. We also offer financing services to help make this and other treatments more affordable.

How Does Hormone Replacement Therapy Work?

The hormone replacement therapy procedure is a quick process that takes less than 20 minutes. During the treatment, we will insert a pellet into the skin through a small incision, usually around the buttocks. These pellets will contain a fixed amount of hormones depending on the patient’s needs. Over time, the pellet will gradually release the needed hormones into the body. The hormone release from pellets is much more consistent than oral or topical hormone replacement treatments, eliminating the somewhat unpredictable effects of these methods. After three to six months, the pellet will be completely dissolved. At this point, patients may choose to receive an additional pellet.

What Are the Benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy in Women?

For women, estrogens may increase HDL, the “good” cholesterol, and decrease LDL, the “bad” cholesterol. In addition, it may improve mood, energy levels, and sleep patterns while decreasing blood pressure and plaque formation on the arterial walls. Proper estrogen levels may also improve memory and cognitive function while reducing bone loss. Testosterone in women can enhance libido, support bone building (which increases calcium retention), and provide cardiovascular protection while improving energy levels and mental alertness. Progesterone is necessary for women during pregnancy for maintenance of the uterine lining. It also stimulates new bone growth and may enhance the beneficial effect of estrogen on lipid and cholesterol profiles.

What Are the Benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy in Men?

For men, hormone therapy primarily focuses on the replacement of natural testosterone. We offer Testosterone USP, which is a natural form of testosterone and the same one produced by the human body. In addition to addressing the symptoms listed above, maintaining proper testosterone levels can minimize your risk for developing various types of heart disease. Testosterone has never been proven to cause prostate cancer, and men who have low testosterone levels actually have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer and a higher incidence of enlarged prostates.
