Upper Eyelid Lift
An Upper Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty) is a procedure that improves the appearance of the upper eyelid. Specifically, an Upper Eyelid Lift can treat:
- Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or hides the natural contour of the upper eyelid
- Excess skin that hangs down from the upper eyelid
- Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids
The position of the eyebrow can contribute to excess skin in an upper eyelid and should be evaluated and discussed before making the decision to remove upper eyelid skin. Although, mostly done for cosmetic reasons, an Upper Eyelid Lift may also be done for functional correction if the excess skin causes impaired vision.
Consultation for Upper Eyelid Lift
When considering an Upper Eyelid Lift, you want to not only know your surgeon but trust that they understand how you want to look and feel, and that they can help you achieve the look you desire. The consultation gives you the opportunity to get to know Dr. Layton and discuss your goals, desires and expectations with him.
In a comfortable, low stress environment, you will have an examination by Dr. Layton where he will ask you to explain the specifics of what is bothering you about your face, and eyes in particular. Together with him, both of you will examine your face to point out concerns and possible solutions. You will be fully involved in the process, which will educate you and provide you with a detailed understanding of the proposed procedure, possible risks and expectations. You will also be able to review photos of other patients that have had an Upper Eyelid Lift by Dr. Layton.
You will be given information to read and will be provided ample time to have all your questions answered by Dr. Layton. Our desire is for each patient to be fully informed and educated so that they are comfortable with their decisions and we are able to understand and exceed their expectations.
Upper Eyelid Lift Surgery Procedure
You will have the choice of general anesthesia or local anesthesia for the procedure. This depends on your desires as well whether any other procedures are being performed. Whether in the office or at the surgery center, you will be marked by Dr. Layton before the procedure and given the opportunity to ask any questions. An Upper Eyelid Lift usually takes thirty minutes to perform but if other procedures are performed at the same time, the operative time will increase accordingly. You can usually go home the day of surgery.
An incision is made within the natural crease of the upper eyelid. This will allow removing or repositioning of fat deposits and/or removal of excess skin to create a more youthful upper eyelid contour. The incision is closed with stitches, and the stitches are removed approximately five to seven days following surgery at your first post-operative appointment.
Prior to the day of surgery, you will be given prescriptions for antibiotics and pain medication to take after surgery. Before discharge following surgery, you will be given an instruction sheet that will explain incision care, activity detail, medication usage and follow-up appointment scheduling. Driving is not permitted while taking pain medication.
You should expect some swelling but with elevation of your head and ice, this dramatically improves over the first 48 hours. There may be bruising. Most patients experience minimal pain and it is easily controlled by pain medications.
