ABDOMINAL PROCEDURES – Full Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty); Mini-Tummy Tuck; Extended Tummy Tuck; or Liposuction
Your stomach or abdomen can be rejuvenated through one of four methods: Full Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty); Mini-Tummy Tuck; Extended Tummy Tuck; or Liposuction. When determining which procedure is best for a patient, we examine the following three layers of the abdomen:
The fascia or muscle layer, which is the deep layer that separates the abdominal contents from the external skin and fat. This layer can be stretched out of its normal position and develop laxity from pregnancy, weight loss or genetics. This can be evaluated by tightening your stomach muscles and then completely relaxing them. The amount of damage to this layer can be determined by the difference between these two maneuvers. In most cases, this layer is restored by one of four tummy tuck methods (abdominoplasties).
The second layer is the fatty layer between the muscle and overlying skin. This thickness varies dramatically between patients. If this layer of fat is the only problem component, liposuction alone may be the best option. However, if the fat layer is accompanied with excess skin or loose muscles, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) may be the best option.
The third layer is the skin. In a full tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), we are afforded to luxury of excising large amounts of excess skin. In general, liposuction alone will cause some skin shrinking or contracture; however, if there is a large amount of excess skin, poor skin tone or a lower abdominal lop-over, an abdominoplasty would be the most appropriate procedure.
When considering an abdomen procedure, you want to not only know your surgeon but trust that they understand how you want to look and feel, and that they can help you achieve the look you desire. The consultation gives you the opportunity to get to know Dr. Layton and discuss your goals, desires and expectations with him. As many are self conscious or embarrassed by their current appearance, we make every effort to make this a comfortable experience. Each of three abdominal layers will be evaluated and discussed with you.
